Growing great vegetables is a combination of items from our experience. These 5 tips to growing great vegetables are key.
1. Give vegetables enough sun. Most vegetables need a good amount of sunlight.
2. Rich, loose soil is key. Most vegetables like soil that is not just one mix out of a bag. Often it may take combining mixes and even adding some home made compost. Solid compost is not as good as a soil with some air to it.
3. Watering is crucial to seedlings. Watering new seeds and seedlings daily until they are an inch tall ensures the roots get established and the plants will survive.
4. Limit use of commercial fertilizers. Commercial fertilizers won't add much in the way of nutrients. Longer lasting organic soils and fertilizers will ensure plants are stronger and healthier.
5. Don't let vegetables bolt. When they try to flower and go to seed rather than continue to produce, many vegetables should have the flowers cut off to keep producing vegetables. Examples would be lettuce, kale, and collards.
