Growing Great Collards

Collards are a terrific vegetable to grow, with collard greens producing for months and months. These tips should help you learn how to enjoy growing this wonderful vegetable. The Collards in the photo below are Georgia Southern Collards. Collards like a lot of sun and regular watering. We find it is easy to grow them from seed as their germination rate is high and seeds are cheap. Once plants are a month and a half old with at least 10 leaves, we start harvesting. Young plants should always have at least a few leaves left on the plant for photosynthesis after harvesting. Older plants, such as those 4-5 months old have done fine for us with all leaves cut off for eating. On these older plants, they have so much core strength that they grow new leaves within another couple weeks for another small harvest, then another set, and so on.
